Georgian financial investigators have uncovered an unlicensed online gambling operation in the Black Sea city of Batumi, arresting one suspect and launching criminal proceedings in absentia against another, the Finance Ministry's Investigative Service said on Monday.
The agency said an investigation found that the suspects had covertly set up a facility that streamed live gambling games over the internet to the websites of foreign online casinos without the required operating licence.
According to investigators, if the business had operated legally, it would have been required to pay a licence fee of 100,000 lari (about $37,000) to the state budget.
The Investigative Service said authorities were continuing efforts to identify other individuals allegedly involved in the operation.
The crime carries a prison sentence of between three and five years upon conviction, the agency said.
