A shift supervisor at the Red Bridge customs checkpoint on Georgia's border has been arrested on suspicion of accepting a large bribe, the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance has said.
The arrest followed operational and investigative measures carried out in coordination with the Georgian Prosecutor's Office and the Revenue Service.
Investigators alleged that the customs official promised to facilitate the undeclared import of US$200,000 into Georgia. In return, the suspect allegedly demanded a bribe of US$8,000 for each such transaction.
The official was arrested immediately after allegedly receiving the first instalment of the requested bribe, amounting to US$4,000, the Investigation Service said.
The agency said covert investigative measures, authorised by a court, had produced audio and video evidence relating to the alleged offence.
The offence carries a prison sentence of seven to 11 years.
