Georgia introduces portable noise-level checks for vehicles

Starting today, authorized units of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs will begin checking noise levels produced by vehicles during operation using portable noise-measuring equipment compliant with the international ISO 5130:2019 standard.

The Ministry on Tuesday said permissible vehicle noise levels are regulated by a relevant government decree. In populated areas, vehicle noise during nighttime hours - from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. - must not exceed 80 decibels.

Under Georgia’s Code of Administrative Offences, driving a vehicle that exceeds the legally established noise limit is punishable by a GEL 100 fine and a 10-point deduction from the driver's licence. A repeated offence carries a GEL 200 fine and a 20-point deduction, while a third and each subsequent violation results in a GEL 300 fine and a 30-point deduction.

The Interior Ministry said its officers will continue actively enforcing public order and protecting citizens’ safety, including monitoring road traffic and responding to traffic violations.
