Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, has sent a letter of condolence to Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili following the death of His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.

In her message, Gafarova expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the prominent religious leader, highlighting his contributions to the well-being of humanity, the promotion of peace and solidarity in the Caucasus, and the fostering of interfaith dialogue. She also noted Ilia II’s efforts in strengthening friendly relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan.

“We share in your grief over this profound loss, and on my own behalf, as well as on behalf of the members of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, I extend sincere condolences to you, to the members of your parliament, and to the friendly people of your country,” Gafarova wrote.

Patriarch Ilia II, who led the Georgian Orthodox Church for decades, died on 17 March at the age of 93. He will be buried at Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi on 22 March, amid a national period of mourning.
