Georgia and Azerbaijan have agreed to accelerate work on the delimitation and demarcation of their shared border, including the section around the David Gareji monastery complex, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said Friday.
Speaking to journalists after meetings with Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov, Kobakhidze said the issue had been discussed both during the meeting of the two countries’ intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation and in bilateral talks.
He said there had been no significant progress on border delimitation and demarcation for many years and stressed the need to move the process forward more quickly.
“We expressed our hope that work on border delimitation and demarcation would continue at a much faster pace. We received a very friendly response from the Azerbaijani side and agreed to accelerate the process,” Kobakhidze said.
He added that around 15 sections of the shared border remained unresolved and should be discussed in a friendly manner between the two countries.
“The main thing is to resolve these issues in principle, and completing the delimitation and demarcation process is essential to achieving that,” he said.
