Amy W. Diaz assumes role as acting US ambassador to Georgia

Amy W. Diaz, a senior career member of the US Foreign Service, has assumed the role of Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Tbilisi, the embassy said on Thursday.

Diaz took up the post in July 2026, succeeding Alan Purcell, who had been serving as acting head of the US diplomatic mission in Georgia.

According to the embassy, Diaz most recently served as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi. Her previous assignments also include deputy director of the State Department's Office of Policy and Global Issues for Europe, Consular Section Chief at the US Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, and head of the Counternarcotics Team at the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Earlier in her career, Diaz served as Internal Political Unit Chief at the US Embassy in Tbilisi, as well as Rule of Law Advisor and Summit of the Americas Coordinator at the US Embassy in Panama City. She also held vice consul positions in Harare and Monterrey, Mexico.

Diaz joined the US Department of State in 2002 as a Presidential Management Fellow and became a career Foreign Service officer in 2005. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arizona.

The embassy said Diaz has received numerous Superior Honor Awards and Meritorious Honor Awards from the US Department of State. She is married and has one child.
