Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zourabichvili, on Thursday commented on the initiative to abolish the current grant-based model starting next year, writing on social media: “Do not believe that your children will be protected tomorrow by the privileged positions you hold today”.

She added that isolating the country would ultimately affect “everyone’s future”.

Zourabichvili said young people, regardless of social background, would face the same limitations if Georgia continues on its current path.

“They too will study using guidelines written by a commission created by one ministry; they too will have restrictions on studying abroad (unless Russia is their ideal). Placing the country in isolation will impact everyone,” she stated.

Starting in 2026, students admitted to public universities will have their full tuition covered by the Government, while those enrolling in private universities will no longer receive state funding.
