Georgia's fifth President Salome Zourabichvili has said she remains committed to an initiative that evolved into a political charter signed by multiple opposition actors, stressing that broad unity was now more necessary than ever.
“I remain loyal to the initiative that was transformed into a charter and which everyone signed,” she said.
Zourabichvili added the current political climate underscored the need for cooperation, even if full consolidation into a single political force was neither realistic nor desirable.
“Today, more than ever, we need this type of unity. Everyone emphasises that this is not unity,” she said, suggesting that misconceptions persisted about the nature of the initiative.
She added that the aim was not to create a single party or a one-party structure, but to ensure coordinated action among different political and civic groups.
“Of course, no one is going to turn into one party and no one needs any form of one-party unification. But the unity of this society requires the unity of parties and the freedom of activists. It must be a very broad unity that sets itself the goal of change,” Zourabichvili said.
