Police in western Georgia have seized 148 cryptocurrency mining devices and launched an investigation into alleged violations of energy consumption regulations in the municipality of Mestia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said on Thursday.

Officers from the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Police Department carried out a series of coordinated operational and investigative measures, leading to the discovery of cryptocurrency mining equipment at six separate locations across the municipality.

Investigators alleged that local residents used the devices to generate digital currency through the large-scale illegal consumption of electricity, obtaining unlawful financial benefits on a systematic basis.

During searches conducted by law enforcement officers, a significant quantity of specialised technical equipment was seized as evidence.

The Interior Ministry said investigative activities remain ongoing to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the scheme.

The offence is punishable by up to three years in prison.
