Police in western Georgia have seized an additional 42 cryptocurrency mining devices during an ongoing investigation in the municipality of Mestia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has said.

Investigators found that the equipment had allegedly been used by local residents to generate digital currency through the systematic and unlawful consumption of large amounts of electricity, resulting in illegal financial gains.

The ministry on Thursday said law enforcement officers are continuing investigative activities to identify other individuals involved in the alleged scheme and to take appropriate legal action against them.

The crime carries a maximum prison sentence of up to three years.
