The Embassy of France in Georgia has said that only unity reinforced by “demanding and responsible dialogue” can prevent the return of past tragedies, marking the anniversary of the Soviet occupation of Georgia.
In a statement, the embassy recalled that on 25 February 1921, the Red Army entered Tbilisi, bringing an end to the First Democratic Republic of Georgia and leading to the country’s forced integration into the Soviet Union. It said this historical memory resonated strongly in the current context.
“Russia continues to challenge the fundamental principles of international law, sovereignty, and the inviolability of borders,” the statement read.
The embassy emphasised that commemorating 25 February means not only honouring those who defended Georgia’s freedom, but also reaffirming a shared belief that only unity, strengthened by responsible and principled dialogue, can prevent the tragedies of the past from recurring.
France, the statement added, fully supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
