France has paid tribute to 17 Georgian soldiers who were killed in the Battle of Shindisi on August 11, 2008, the French Embassy in Georgia said on Tuesday.

In a statement marking the anniversary of the battle, the embassy said the soldiers' courage and sacrifice remain a symbol of the Georgian people's commitment to independence in the face of Russian occupation forces.

"France honours their memory and once again confirms its unwavering support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders," the embassy said.

The 17 Georgian soldiers were killed in an unequal confrontation with Russian forces on August 11, 2008.
