The United States has said it expects its partnership with Georgia to deliver tangible benefits for both countries, following a series of meetings with government and opposition representatives in Tbilisi.

In a statement released by the US Embassy on Monday, a visiting State Department delegation said it had held talks with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, senior government officials and opposition leaders between 25 and 28 May to discuss the future of bilateral relations.

The delegation said the Donald Trump administration was prepared to pursue a constructive and forward-looking relationship with Georgia based on mutual respect, shared interests and open dialogue between sovereign partners.

According to the statement, discussions with government officials focused on areas of potential cooperation, including national sovereignty, economic development, resilience to external influence, security and energy cooperation.

The delegation also highlighted its interest in expanding commercial ties, including increasing opportunities for American exports and investment in Georgia.

However, US officials said a stronger strategic partnership would require continued progress in creating a favourable environment for American businesses, as well as a stable domestic political climate that enables opposition participation.

During the visit, the delegation also met representatives of Georgia's main opposition parties. According to the statement, opposition leaders raised concerns about the political environment following the October 2024 elections, including ongoing legal proceedings and the broader democratic landscape.

The delegation reiterated Washington's view that a functioning democracy requires meaningful opposition participation in political institutions and public life.

The statement concluded by saying the United States looks forward to working with the Georgian government on a partnership that will benefit both countries and realise the full potential of bilateral relations.
