Two years since Shovi tragedy: Remembering 33 lives lost in 2023 landslide

August 3 marks two years since the devastating landslide struck the resort area of Shovi, Georgia, claiming the lives of 33 people.

On that tragic day in 2023, a massive landslide, triggered by a flash flood, swept through the area, destroying a road bridge and several cottages where dozens of vacationers were staying. The sudden natural disaster caught many off guard.

Emergency responders were alerted by survivors who managed to make calls from within the disaster zone. Due to the magnitude of the landslide and difficult terrain, rescue operations were extremely challenging. A rescue helicopter arrived at the scene nearly three hours after the disaster struck. In total, 210 people were evacuated from the area by air.

Among the victims were entire families, including children. The following individuals lost their lives in the disaster:
