The Ministry of Internal Affairs on Saturday announced the arrest of Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the opposition coalition Lelo - Strong Georgia, stating he attempted to set fire to the Tbilisi City Court registry building earlier this morning.

Investigators say Elisashvili, wearing a disguise, used a hammer to smash a window on the outer facade of the court’s registry building. He then entered the premises, where he allegedly poured gasoline around the interior perimeter - including on office supplies, equipment and documents - in an attempt to ignite the building.

Court security officers reportedly encountered him at the scene. The Ministry claims Elisashvili resisted arrest, using a firearm he had in his possession and physically assaulted the officers. Despite the resistance, security personnel detained him on site.

One officer was hospitalised with injuries sustained during the confrontation. Elisashvili also received injuries during the arrest, the Ministry said.

Police seized the alleged weapons used in the attempted arson as evidence.

The investigation is ongoing under Article 19-187 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to attempted property damage or destruction.
