Man arrested after stabbing civilian and injuring police officer in Tbilisi, MIA says

Georgian police have arrested a man accused of stabbing a civilian, refusing to comply with police orders and injuring a patrol officer during an incident in central Tbilisi, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

The body added officers from the Tbilisi Main Division of the Patrol Police Department were patrolling the Chughureti district when they spotted an armed man who had allegedly wounded another person and was continuing to pursue the victim with a knife.

Police officers ordered the suspect to stop, but he allegedly ignored their lawful instructions, became aggressive and attacked the officers.

During the confrontation, the man allegedly stabbed one of the patrol inspectors before attempting to flee the scene, the Ministry said.

Officers pursued and detained the suspect in the surrounding area.

The injured civilian and the wounded patrol officer were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Their lives are not in danger, according to the Ministry.

The knife allegedly used in the incident has been seized as evidence.

The offences carry a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
