Georgia’s Interior Ministry has destroyed 553kg of drugs seized as evidence in criminal investigations across the country, with an estimated value of more than 34m lari ($12.6m).

The ministry said the drugs were destroyed in a high-temperature furnace operated by its Forensic-Criminalistics Department in line with modern safety standards.

The substances included methadone, MDMA, heroin, cocaine, buprenorphine, alpha-PVP, clephedrone, tramadol and codeine.

Psychotropic substances and new psychoactive substances were also destroyed.

The ministry said the destruction was carried out in accordance with Georgian law and environmental safety standards.

Representatives of the Interior Ministry, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Health Ministry took part in the process as members of a standing commission overseeing the destruction of the seized substances.
