Georgian Interior Ministry launches investigation into Melikishvili Avenue clashes under group violence charges

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has launched an investigation into the confrontation that occurred on Melikishvili Avenue in the capital city of Tbilisi on Sunday, the body said in a statement.

The ministry added the case was being investigated under Article 126¹ of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to group violence.

“Law enforcement officers are carrying out the relevant investigative actions in connection with the incident. The clash between citizens took place in the afternoon on Melikishvili Avenue. Police officers on site took measures to defuse the situation and prevent further escalation of the conflict,” the MIA noted.

The confrontation broke out near the election headquarters of incumbent Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, where, according to protesters, ruling party representatives physically attacked demonstrators and threw objects at them. Several individuals were reported injured.
