Early warning system triggers evacuation at Dariali border crossing

An early warning system installed in the Devdoraki Gorge has issued an alert after detecting a rise in water flow in the riverbed, Georgia’s Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said people present at the Dariali border crossing were evacuated to a safe location. The evacuation also included employees of the Patrol Police, Border Police, Customs Service and a private company operating at the crossing.

As a precautionary measure, traffic for all types of vehicles has also been restricted in both directions near the village of Gveleti.

The ministry said the measures were taken following the alert from the monitoring system, which is designed to detect even minimal changes in water flow.
