Sweden is holding parliamentary elections, with around 8 million people eligible to vote in the country of 10.6 million.
Voters are electing all 349 members of the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, as well as representatives to municipal and regional councils.
Polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. local time and will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Exit polls and preliminary results are expected shortly after voting ends.
Western media say the closely contested election could result in far-right parties entering government for the first time, or see the left-wing opposition return to power.
