Polish Foreign Minister: “We are saddened to see Georgia moving away from European path”

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed concern over Georgia’s democratic backsliding during a speech before the Polish parliament (Sejm), highlighting the country’s distancing from its European trajectory. “We are saddened to see Georgia moving away from its European path,” Sikorski said, adding, “We are not blaming Georgian society for the decisions of its government.”

The minister underscored that European Union membership is a privilege, not an obligation, and emphasized that it requires a conscious choice made by both the government and the free will of its citizens. He noted that sanctions have been imposed on individuals responsible for political repression in Georgia.

Sikorski’s remarks came in the context of broader regional concerns, especially the ongoing war in Ukraine and its long-term implications for security across Eastern Europe. He warned that the outcome of Russia’s aggression will influence the fate of countries like Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, and Armenia in their efforts to move closer to Europe.
