Slovenia’s parliamentary speaker has announced plans to hold a referendum on the country’s membership in NATO, arguing for a more independent and sovereignty-focused foreign policy.
Speaking publicly, Zoran Stevanović, leader of the Pravda party and recently elected speaker of the National Assembly, said the move reflected a commitment to what he described as “pro-Slovenian” decision-making.
He said Slovenia should pursue an independent course in international affairs, avoiding involvement in foreign military and diplomatic conflicts.
“I do not hold pro-Russian views, only pro-Slovenian ones,” he said, adding that the country should prioritise its own national interests.
Stevanović confirmed that a referendum on NATO membership had been promised to voters and would be held, without specifying a timeline.
He also said Slovenia should maintain cooperative relations with all countries, particularly major powers, but stressed that such engagement should not come at the cost of subordination.
“Good relations with everyone, but in Slovenia’s interests,” he added.
Stevanović was elected speaker of Slovenia’s lower house of parliament last week.
