An inmate has died at Penitentiary Institution No. 2 in Kutaisi after falling from the upper level of a bunk bed, Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service said.
The agency claimed the incident occurred on 9 October at 2:35pm, when the inmate’s cellmates alerted prison staff that he had fallen from the upper bunk and landed face down on the floor.
The inmate, identified by the initials G.G., had been placed at the facility on 2 October 2026. At the time of the incident, five other inmates were in the cell, the service said.
A prison social worker was standing outside the cell door and communicating with an inmate through the inspection hatch when he also heard the sound of the fall. The service said the social worker’s reaction was visible in surveillance footage recorded in the corridor.
Medical staff arrived approximately one minute after receiving the alert and provided first aid. An ambulance was called at 2:36pm and arrived at 2:50pm. Despite medical efforts, the inmate could not be saved, and his death was pronounced at 3:15pm.
