Georgia’s State Security Service (SSS) has arrested Lasha Tsanava, a member of the Political Council of the opposition United National Movement (UNM), on charges of fraud involving a foreign national seeking a residence permit.
According to the SSS Anti-Corruption Agency, Tsanava was detained based on a court ruling following complex investigative and covert operations. The investigation revealed that Tsanava promised a foreign citizen assistance in securing a one-year residence permit in Georgia through his alleged connections. In return, he demanded a payment of $5,600 USD.
According to the SSS, on May 21, 2025, the foreign citizen transferred part of the requested sum to Tsanava’s bank account. Tsanava reportedly continued to pressure the individual for the remaining amount and received an additional $2,500 in cash during two meetings in Tbilisi on May 30 and June 12, respectively. In total, Tsanava allegedly obtained $2,650 through deceit.
Authorities also conducted covert investigative actions, including the collection of audio and video recordings, which they say document the fraudulent activity.
The case is being investigated under Article 19-180, Part 2, Subparagraph “b” of the Georgian Criminal Code, which pertains to attempted fraud involving a significant amount of money. If convicted, Tsanava faces a prison sentence of four to seven years.
The SSS emphasized the importance of the evidence obtained and reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption at all levels.
