Kaladze said rehabilitation works would focus on the affected sections of the cathedral and bell tower

Tbilisi Development Fund is set to begin restoration works at Sioni Cathedral, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced.

Speaking at a municipal government meeting, Kaladze said the cathedral and its bell tower were protected cultural heritage monuments and described them as an important part of the capital’s historical heritage.

According to the mayor, the current condition of the cathedral’s roof and bell tower has been damaged, allowing rainwater to penetrate the structure and threaten interior walls and historic frescoes.

Kaladze said rehabilitation works would focus on the affected sections of the cathedral and bell tower.

He added that tender procedures had been completed, a contractor had already been selected and a formal agreement signed.

The mayor said the restoration project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
