Police in Tbilisi have arrested a man with a previous theft conviction on suspicion of stealing a car and later crashing it, Georgia's Interior Ministry said on Monday.

Officers from the Old Tbilisi Main Division of the Tbilisi Police Department arrested the suspect following operational and investigative measures.

The man allegedly stole the keys to a friend's car and the friend's wallet. He then took the vehicle from a car park without permission and left the scene.

Shortly afterwards, the suspect crashed the stolen car and fled, abandoning the vehicle at the scene.

Police arrested him soon after the incident, the ministry said. The stolen car and wallet were recovered as evidence.

The offence carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
