Former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili “stabbed himself in the back” and it would be better for him to realize this as soon as possible, Tengiz Sharmanashvili, First Deputy Chairman of Parliament’s Defense and Security Committee, said on Tuesday.

Sharmanashvili was commenting on a letter by Garibashvili, who is currently in prison.

“How did we stab him in the back?! Did we put $5 million in his house, arrange the watches - none of which was worth less than $100,000 - and the gold bars, then conduct a search and find all of this?!” Sharmanashvili said.

“He stabbed himself in the back, and the sooner he realizes this, the better. How can this be political persecution?! He admitted to a specific crime. Even if he had not admitted it, things were found in his house during the search whose legality he could not justify,” he added.

The MP added the items allegedly found during the search demonstrate that Garibashvili himself bears responsibility for his current situation.
