Former For Georgia party member Teona Akubardia on Friday announced on social media that she would continue her political activity independently, reaffirming her commitment to defending Georgia’s national interests - the reason she entered politics in 2020.

“I share with you my decision to once again continue the struggle independently in defence of Georgia’s national interests, the very reason I joined politics in 2020,” Akubardia wrote.

She noted that she was and remains in opposition to the current Government.

“In the 2024 parliamentary elections, I was an independent candidate on the For Georgia party list, working around issues of sovereignty and national security. Like 12 of my colleagues, after unfair and unfree elections, I refused to legitimise Ivanishvili’s one-party parliament,” Akubardia said.

According to her, against the backdrop of what she called the Government’s reversal of Georgia’s domestic and foreign course and ongoing mass repressions, her opposition to the regime remains unchanged.

Akubardia also reflected on opposition mistakes, arguing that the main failure was not the boycott of Parliament, but the lack of a unified vision and cohesion around shared goals at a time when the country faces the threat of losing sovereignty and territorial integrity.

She reiterated her belief that without new free and fair parliamentary elections and the release of political prisoners, Georgia cannot return to a constitutional path.

“I will continue to fight, to the best of my ability, for the goal of a united European Georgia. Thank you to everyone who supported me in this struggle. I believe that in the end, we will prevail,” Akubardia concluded.
