Civic Idea chair: European Parliament’s resolution highlights lack of international recognition for Georgian government

Tina Khidasheli, chairwoman of the Civic Idea organization, has responded to the recent European Parliament resolution calling for fresh elections and sanctions on Georgian officials, stating that it reflects a “logical outcome” in light of Georgia’s current political situation.

According to Khidasheli, the resolution underscores a significant milestone – “for the first time in Georgia’s history, the country has a government that has not received international recognition”.

“The results that have come today are completely logical. This is very sad for our country, but it is an objective decision that for the first time in the history of Georgia’s independence, Georgia has a government that has not received international recognition. Such a thing has not happened in Georgia, so there is nothing surprising in this resolution,” Khidasheli said.

She went on to criticize the Georgian government’s dismissal of the European Parliament’s resolutions, suggesting that they were seen as insignificant by the authorities. “In the opinion of this government, the European Parliament is not important, the resolutions of the European Parliament are not important, they are just empty papers,” she added.

Khidasheli further challenged the government, stating that if the European Parliament’s resolution holds no weight, then the Georgian government should present recognition from any democratic state other than Hungary and Slovakia, the only EU members to extend such recognition.

“The European Parliament resolution is a continuation of the spirit that exists in the entire civilized world,” Khidasheli concluded, underscoring the broader international context of the resolution.
