Ruling party MP Tornike Pagava has accused the Georgian opposition of attempting to damage relations between Georgia and the United States while the government seeks closer ties with Washington.
Speaking during a plenary session of parliament on Wednesday, Pagava congratulated citizens on Georgia’s Independence Day and described 26 May as a cornerstone of the modern Georgian state.
The MP said Georgia’s “3,000-year history of statehood” demonstrated that the country represented a “permanent idea of freedom”.
Pagava highlighted congratulatory messages received from international leaders in recent days, including from US President Donald Trump, whom he said had expressed willingness to renew and deepen relations with Georgia.
Against that backdrop, Pagava accused opposition leaders of travelling to Washington and spreading what he described as false information aimed at harming Georgia’s national interests.
He also claimed opposition representatives had previously lobbied against visa liberalisation for Georgian citizens with the European Union.
According to the ruling party MP, the opposition lacks public support both electorally and on the streets, and its attempts to mislead Georgian society repeatedly end in failure.
Pagava said the government would continue acting in what it considers the best interests of the Georgian people, with preserving peace and stability remaining its main priority amid regional tensions following the war in Ukraine.
