US President Donald Trump has paid tribute to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham following his death, describing the longtime lawmaker as a “true American patriot” who would be deeply missed.
“Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away, one of the greatest people and senators I have ever known. He always worked hard and was a true American patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed,” Trump wrote on social media.
Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina, died at the age of 71 following a brief illness, according to his office.
The senator was a prominent figure in US politics and a close ally of Trump. He was first elected to the Senate in 2002 and played a leading role in debates on national security and foreign policy.
Graham was also a vocal supporter of Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion, advocating increased military assistance for Kyiv and tougher sanctions against Moscow.
