Us President Donald J. Trump issued a stark warning to China on his Truth Social account, threatening to impose additional 50% tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing does not reverse its newly announced 34% retaliatory tariffs by tomorrow, April 8.
In his post, Trump accused China of engaging in “record-setting tariffs,” illegal subsidies, and currency manipulation, calling their latest move a “retaliation” against prior US trade actions. He reiterated his administration’s policy that any country imposing additional tariffs against the US would face “new and substantially higher” trade penalties in response.
“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow… the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump declared.
He also announced that all ongoing discussions with China would be terminated if the new tariffs remain in place. Meanwhile, he signaled that the US would begin trade negotiations with other countries “immediately.”
