Ukrainian FM Dmytro Kuleba says that Mikheil Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia who was arrested in Tbilisi late yesterday ahead of today’s municipal elections, will receive all necessary support from Ukraine as a citizen of Ukraine.

Saakashvili currently chairs the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian National Reforms Council as a citizen of the country.

Kuleba stated that a representative of the Georgian embassy to Ukraine will arrive in the foreign ministry soon to discuss the issue.

Mikhail Podolyak, an adviser to the chief of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andriy Yermak, stated that the Ukrainian president has taken Saakashvili’s detention issue on his ‘personal control.’

Saakashvili, who has plans to change the Georgian Dream government in Georgia, is now in the 12th prison of Rustavi, eastern Georgian city.

He was convicted in absentia in Georgia for two separate cases in 2018 and was sentenced to six years in prison for abuse of authority.

Three other cases, in which Saakashvili is charged, are still in courts.

Saakashvili says all the cases are politically motivated.
