Vakhtang Machavariani, one of Georgia’s most distinguished conductors and composers, has died at the age of 74.

The news was confirmed by his son, Aleksi Machavariani, who wrote in a social media post: “It is with deep regret that I write that my father passed away last night.”

Machavariani served as the chief conductor of the Evgeni Mikeladze Georgian State Symphony Orchestra from 1996, and since 2018, he had also led the Night Serenades festival, founded by violinist Liana Isakadze. He was a frequent guest conductor at the Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.
