A meeting between Georgian Dream honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili and Israel’s ambassador to Georgia may signal an attempt by the ruling party to establish new channels of communication with the international community, an opposition political figure has suggested.

Valeri Chechelashvili, a member of the opposition group Georgia First, said such meetings were unusual and could indicate that the encounter was linked to specific circumstances.

“It is not an ordinary occurrence for Georgian Dream’s honorary chairman, Bidzina Ivanishvili, to meet with a foreign ambassador. Therefore, this must be connected to some special circumstances,” Chechelashvili said.

He suggested that the meeting could have been intended either to promote particular business projects or to pursue a broader political objective.

In the latter case, he said, Georgian Dream may be seeking to establish new communication channels with the international community.

Chechelashvili pointed to Israel’s traditionally friendly relations with Georgia and its strategic partnership with the United States as factors that could make the meeting particularly significant.

He said the coming weeks could provide further indications of the meeting’s purpose, suggesting that similar meetings with other foreign ambassadors would follow if the intention was to broaden international contacts.

Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, recently met with Israel’s ambassador to Georgia.
