A new road bridge connecting Tbilisi’s Vashlijvari district with the village of Digomi has opened to traffic, restoring full vehicle access across the Digmura River.
The bridge on Tetri Duknis Street replaces a damaged 64-metre metal structure that had become unsafe and was periodically subject to restrictions for heavy and oversized vehicles.
The old bridge was fully dismantled and replaced with a reinforced-concrete structure built to modern safety standards, Tbilisi City Hall said on Monday.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze inspected the completed project together with Deputy Mayor Irakli Bendeliani.
“This is an important project for the capital,” Kaladze said.
The new structure includes a pedestrian pavement, street lighting, road markings and metal railings. A drainage system was also installed, while overhead cables were moved underground into dedicated cable ducts.
The project cost 4 million lari ($1.5m) and was carried out by the Tbilisi Municipal Infrastructure Development Service.
