Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday said Ukraine is ready to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but has not received any formal request from its allies.
Zelenskyy added partners had only asked Kyiv to share its experience, rather than provide direct assistance.
He noted that Ukraine has “unique experience” in maintaining maritime routes, referring to efforts in the Black Sea after Russia attempted to block Ukraine’s grain corridor using ships, missiles and aircraft.
“We destroyed part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and forced them to retreat from the corridor,” he said, adding that the route is now functioning under Ukrainian control.
Tensions in the region have escalated since Iran moved to block the strait following the start of a US-Israeli military campaign, contributing to rising global oil prices.
US President Donald Trump has urged NATO allies to help reopen the waterway, warning that Iran must do so within 48 hours or face severe consequences.
