Olympic judo champion Zurab Zviadauri has been placed in pre-trial detention, following a ruling by Judge Davit Kurtanidze.

The defence had requested Zviadauri’s release on bail set at ₾20,000 ($7,407), while the prosecution sought detention - a request the court granted.

According to the prosecution, two firearms were seized in the case, one of which was legally registered and the other unregistered.

Zviadauri was detained by law enforcement on Tuesday. The Prosecutor’s Office has charged him with the illegal purchase, storage, and carrying of firearms and ammunition. The charges carry a prison sentence of four to seven years.
