Zelenskyy vows ‘continuous fight’ to defend world from Russian aggression

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday pledged a “continuous fight” to defend the world from Russian aggression, in his first foreign trip to Washingron since the Russian invasion of his country in late February.

He stressed there would be “no just peace” in the war “launched by Russian enemies against Ukraine, its only end is no compromise on our part”.

"For me, as the president, there will be no compromise on our land, territorial integrity, our sovereignty, compensation for all the losses caused by Russian aggression. There can be no ‘just peace’ in the war that these inhumans have brought," Zelenskyy said.

He stressed the transfer of the Patriot system to Ukraine by the US was an “important step” in creating the Ukrainian air defense.

"We will consider further sanctions and legal pressure on a terrorist state. Russia must be held accountable for everything it is committing against our state, our people, all of Europe and the free world”, Zelenskyy said.

“We have a clear vision of how our defense capabilities can improve in the coming months. I do not want to talk about it now, you understand why, thanks to the President of the US for making the decision”, said the Ukrainian president.

He pledged Ukraine and the US would continue to work to “protect themselves and the world from Russian aggression”.

On his part US president Joe Biden said that “Putin is trying to use winter as a weapon, but the Ukrainian people continue to inspire the world”.

"We will continue to strengthen Ukraine to defend itself, especially in terms of air defense. That is why we will provide Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems and train your forces to accurately use this system," Biden said.

He claimed pressure on the Kremlin and assistance to Ukraine would continue.

"The US stands by the wonderful people of Ukraine. We have a rule here that TIME magazine chooses a person of the year once a year, you are the person of the year in the US," Biden told Zelenskyy.
