Georgia marks Constitution Day

Georgia marks Constitution Day today, commemorating the adoption of the country's current Constitution by parliament in 1995.

The Constitution was adopted on 24 August 1995 at 17:50, with 159 MPs voting in favour and eight against. It entered into force on the day the newly elected parliament of 1995 was officially recognised.

The State Constitutional Commission initially worked on a revised version of Georgia's 1921 Constitution, but later decided to draft an entirely new constitution.

On 17 September 1995, members of the State Constitutional Commission and parliament signed the official text of the Constitution at the government building where Georgia's Supreme Council had proclaimed the Act of Restoration of Independence.

The Constitution has undergone numerous amendments over the years.
