A court in the western Georgian city of Batumi has sentenced a woman to four years in prison after finding her guilty of intentionally killing her newborn child immediately after giving birth, the Prosecutor's Office said on Thursday.
According to prosecutors, the defendant, who worked as a hospital cleaner, gave birth in a restroom at a Batumi clinic on 22 February.
The prosecution said she then intentionally inflicted life-threatening injuries on the newborn and placed the infant in a plastic bag intended for medical waste.
The baby was discovered by medical staff and received emergency and intensive medical treatment but died in the clinic's intensive care unit on 27 March as a result of the injuries, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
