Aleksandre Tamazashvili, a former ruling Georgian Dream MP and the brother-in-law of the country’s former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, on Monday said that neither the charges nor the court verdict accuse Garibashvili of theft, abuse of state influence, or corruption.
In a post shared on social media, Tamazashvili said it was difficult for him to comment without emotion on the developments surrounding Garibashvili, stressing that the case documents themselves make clear that no corruption-related accusations were brought against him.
Tamazashvili dismissed what he described as celebratory reactions from Garibashvili’s opponents, saying such responses were expected and driven by hostility rather than facts. He also criticised individuals who, in his words, believe they will benefit from the situation.
According to Tamazashvili, Garibashvili deliberately chose not to engage in a legal dispute, despite the possibility of acquittal, in order to avoid damaging the work and values he had served with dedication, as well as the country itself.
He added that clear explanations exist for all aspects of the case and that those who know Garibashvili personally would understand his decision, despite what he described as cynical reactions from critics.
