Parents of children diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have announced plans to take part in Georgia’s Independence Day events on Tuesday while urging the authorities to provide access to life-saving medication.
In a public statement, the parents congratulated the country on Independence Day and wished for a “free, strong and prosperous Georgia”, but said their children continued to face a life-threatening condition that progressively shortens life expectancy and causes severe health deterioration.
The group said essential medication for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy could only be imported through state support, adding that the government had not yet taken the necessary steps.
The parents said an independent state should also mean a country that protects and cares for its children.
They announced that they would attend events at Freedom Square at 12:00, carrying banners to remind the authorities that their children still need urgent support and treatment.
