Annalena Baerbock has been elected as the new President of the United Nations General Assembly. In a secret ballot vote, the former German Foreign Minister received backing from 167 member states.
According to German media, only Russia opposed Baerbock’s candidacy, accusing her of “clear bias” and pushing for a secret ballot.
In her acceptance speech, Baerbock thanked the countries for their trust and vowed to be an “honest broker” for all UN member states.
The President of the UN General Assembly serves a one-year term, a position that is largely ceremonial but carries significant diplomatic influence.
Baerbock served as Germany’s Foreign Minister from 2021 to 2024.
