An opposition politician, Armaz Akhvlediani, has called on the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church to conduct what he described as a fair and exemplary selection process for patriarchal candidates.
Speaking ahead of the Synod’s meeting, Akhvlediani said the church had a “unique opportunity” to demonstrate how elections can be conducted properly, at a time he described as significant for the country.
“We are facing an extraordinary moment,” he said, noting that while the church formally selects its primate through the Synod, the process is taking place in the broader context of Georgia in 2026.
He added that the outcome should distinguish the future head of the Georgian Orthodox Church and reflect a credible and orderly process.
The Holy Synod is expected to select three candidates for the position of Catholicos-Patriarch, who will then proceed to a vote at an enlarged council of bishops.
