The Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church is set to focus on procedural matters during its latest session, as it prepares for what officials describe as a significant forthcoming process.
Speaking ahead of the meeting at the Patriarchate, Archpriest Andria Jagmaidze said the session would address organisational issues required for future work.
“Today’s Synod session will be dedicated to regulating the procedural issues necessary for the major work that lies ahead [the election of the new Patriarch],” he said.
Jagmaidze added that discussions may also touch on the eligibility criteria for future candidates, including the possibility of reviewing the age requirement for the Patriarch.
“There will be discussion on the criteria that a Patriarchal candidate must meet, so the issue of age may also be considered if it is raised,” he said.
He noted that the formal nomination of three candidates would take place at a subsequent Synod meeting, followed by an expanded church assembly, which must be convened within 40 days to two months in accordance with church regulations.
Officials stressed that any decisions would be taken strictly in line with the existing statutes of the Church, and that no amendments to those rules are currently planned.
