Security Service of Ukraine says it thwarts plot to seize Verkhovna Rada building

The Security Service of Ukraine on Monday said it had successfully dismantled a group of provocateurs planning to incite disturbances in Kyiv and seize the Verkhovna Rada building. The group intended to announce the removal of Ukraine's current military and political leadership, the agency claimed.

According to the security service, the group was led by the co-founder of a non-governmental organization known for anti-Ukrainian activities since 2015. Investigation materials revealed that the detainees aimed to disrupt the operations of the Verkhovna Rada by occupying the building, it noted.

The organizers planned to attract participants by staging a seemingly peaceful gathering in the center of Kyiv. However, the majority of the attendees were unaware of the true intentions behind the event, which were to provoke unrest. The provocateurs intended to spread information about the disturbances through domestic and foreign media, hoping to destabilize the social and political situation in Ukraine for the benefit of Russia, the agency said.

The security service has not disclosed the names of the detainees, but noted they included representatives of public organizations from Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. During searches of the organizers' residences, authorities discovered weapons, ammunition, mobile phones, and records providing evidence of criminal activities.

The detainees have been charged with actions aimed at violently changing the constitutional order, overthrowing, or seizing state power. They have been placed in pre-trial detention as a preventive measure.
