Georgia’s Investigative Service of the Ministry of Finance has detained two individuals on charges of storing and distributing counterfeit money following a series of operational and investigative actions.

According to the agency, the suspects attempted to illegally profit by circulating fake currency in several branches of the microfinance organization Rico Express located in the Kvemo Kartli region.

“The investigation established that the accused persons exchanged and distributed a total of 60 counterfeit USD 50 banknotes, amounting to 3,000 US dollars in total,” the statement said.

Authorities added that all the forged banknotes were recovered in full during the investigative process.

The case is being investigated under Article 212, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carries a penalty of 7 to 10 years of imprisonment.
