The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has published a report on Georgia prepared under the OSCE’s Moscow Mechanism, examining developments related to human rights and fundamental freedoms in the country since spring 2024.
According to the report, requested by 23 OSCE participating states, the mission assessed Georgia’s compliance with OSCE commitments and concluded that the country has experienced a sharp democratic backsliding during the reviewed period.
The report cites alleged violence against protesters, opposition figures and journalists, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly and legislation affecting civil society and independent media.
The mission also issued a number of recommendations, including calls to investigate alleged abuses, ensure fair elections, protect media and civil society freedoms and release individuals detained for political reasons.
The report further urges the Georgian authorities to review or repeal several controversial laws and encourages continued international monitoring of the situation.
