The European Parliament has adopted a report stating that Georgia's EU integration process has been de facto suspended since 2024 and calling on the European Union and its member states to impose targeted sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, as well as his family members and affiliated companies.
The report, approved by 436 votes to 145, argues that the policies pursued by the Georgian Dream party have stalled the country's EU accession path. It also urges sanctions against Georgian Dream leaders, judges and prosecutors and calls on member states to act at the national level if EU-wide unanimity cannot be reached.
The document further addresses developments surrounding anti-government protests, condemns violence against demonstrators and media representatives and cites findings of the OSCE Moscow Mechanism report regarding the treatment of detainees.
The report was prepared by the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs and is based on assessments by the European Commission. It is the second critical report adopted by the European Parliament on Georgia since the country obtained EU candidate status.
